New Sod and Landscaping

Watering Exception for New Sod/Landscaping

Per County ordinance, residents are allowed to water new sod and landscaping on any day at any time for the initial 30 days after installation, and then every other day for the next 30 days. Watering is limited to the amount necessary for the sod or landscape to become established. This exception applies only on those specific areas where the new sod and/or landscaping is located.

Residents must provide Orange County Utilities with their name, phone number, address, and any receipts for sod and/or landscape purchases to avoid getting a watering violation during sod/landscape establishment. Although exempt from watering restrictions during this time, residents are not exempt from the applicable water rates. Please keep in mind that an increase in watering will result in higher water bills, which could be hundreds of dollars more than usual.

Knowing Your Lawn

  • Never water your lawn or landscaping between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. During this time, most of the water is lost to evaporation.
  • Use low-flow showerheads.
  • Don’t use running water to defrost food.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
