Rain Sensor Replacement Program

Keeping your rain sensor in proper working order can help save significant amounts of water.

Details

Orange County Utilities wants to help you replace your irrigation system rain sensor. This is one of the most commonly overlooked items that can help you save on your irrigation water consumption. We would be happy to give you a rain sensor at no charge for installation on your property. Having a functioning rain sensor is required by state statutes for any homes that have an in-ground irrigation system connected to a timer.

FAQs

How long do rain sensors last?

The average rain sensor only functions for 3-5 years before needing replacement.

Will a rain sensor make my system run less often?

Yes, if there is rainfall. Rain sensors only function if it rains. During a dry spell, they will not reduce water consumption.

How can I tell if my rain sensor is functioning?

If your rain sensor is older than 5 years, it probably isn't functioning. To test it, apply water to the sensor and see if it prevents your system from running.

How can I keep my rain sensor working?

Replacing the hydroscopic discs will keep your system running as long as possible. If you are part of our Water Wise Neighbor Program, we will mail you a new disc to replace the old one every 18-24 months.
